V-TransformTM - Virtualization Implementation

Once the solution design and project is approved, and site preparation complete, we move into the Virtualization Implementation phase.  For Virtual Server deployments, we deploy the virtualization software in the target environment and start migrating physical servers to virtual machines.  The project timeline as based principally on the number of servers to be migrated.  Generally 25 to 35 physical servers can be migrated each week to the target virtualized environment. For Virtual Desktop implementations, a master (core) desktop configuration is created and distributed to target desktop devices.

Each virtualization implementation employs the following general process:

  • Install Virtualization Software:  Install and deploy core virtualization on all target server hosts and install the virtualization management software on the management server.
  • Configure Virtual Machine Operations Policies: Configure high availability, disaster recovery and performance based policies for the Virtual Machines.  This is a key step to enable business continuity for the resulting virtualized environment.
  • Install Migration Software: Install and configure migration software to enable the "physical-to-virtual" (P2V) server migrations.
  • Perform Physical-to-Virtual Migrations:  Meet with key IT and business team members to validate the data that was collected and validate relevant processes.  Discuss initial findings and recommendations and select initial virtualization focus area(s) for final report and business case.
  • Discuss Best Practices:  Meet with team members to discuss best practices for master images, administration,  maintenance and back-up.
  • Final Documentation: Prepare and deliver final project documentation.
